Parall(elles): A History of Women in Design

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Written By: Elle Eyestone

A new exhibit is showing in the Montreal Museum of Fine Art called “Parall(elles): A History of Women in Design.” The exhibition aims to showcase female designers - both throughout history and in the present day.

Women have made many powerful contributions to the history of design that have largely been underappreciated. Parall(elles) aims to spotlight some of these designers by telling their stories and displaying their art.

The exhibit features both American and Canadian female designers and places a special emphasis on intersections of race, class, gender, and culture. Parall(elles) discusses how educational and professional opportunities affect the designs, methods, and innovations. The exhibit also traces the evolution of the status of crafts and encourages its viewers to rethink classic understandings of design.

With almost 250 works included, ranging from industrial design to fashion to graphics, this exhibit is sure to be amazing.

I look forward to going, and I hope you do as well!

Parall(elles): A History of Women in Design will be shown from the 18th of February through May 28th at 1380 Sherbrooke Street West.
